Winter Care For Children: Tips to keep him healthy

Sensitive and tender, skin of infants becomes dry and lifeless in the humidity of winter. Fever, cold and cough are common in infants during winter. So, little babies need a little more care in this season. Parents should follow the rules below to keep their babies from harsh cold.

Winter clothing:

Considering the severity of chill, parents should have their infants wear proper clothing. Infants are more sensitive to cold than older children.

Bath:

Many parents do not want to bathe their babies lest they should catch cold. However, a regular bath is essential to remove the body oil and dirt. Also, baby soaps are ideal with little alkali. Give your baby a bath in lukewarm water and wipe its body properly with clean towel. For added comfort, allow the baby sit under the sun as it shines mildly.

Use of moisturizer:

Olive oil or moisturizing baby lotions are good for babies after a bath. Apply the lotion or oil after wiping its body with a piece of soft, clean cloth.

Use of cotton:

If the temperature of your house is around 25 degree Celsius on average, you should have your infant wear cotton clothes and wrap him/her with quilt. Cotton is good for air circulation through the body parts and keeping the infants’ skin soft. If the temperature is lower than 25 degree Celsius, give the baby to wear sweater.

Breastfeed your infant as many times as recommended since breast milk ensures immunity against common diseases like fever, cough and cold. Allow for uninterrupted circulation of air and sunshine. It is good to have the baby as much close to the mother’s body for added intimacy instead of keeping it inside mosquito net or cradle.

Frequent change of diapers:

Do not let an infant have a wet diaper for a prolonged period of time. Make sure you change the baby’s diaper more often than just once or twice a day so that the baby remains safe from humidity, rashes and blisters.

What if an infant catches cold?

Being attacked by cold, an infant might have a congested nose. Apply two drops of nasal spray before getting the baby to sleep. If you notice cough, gurgling noise, suffocation or chest sucking, you should take the baby to the doctor as quickly as you can. Honey mixed in warm water may also help.

Winter meal:

Food items containing Vitamin C in abundance are ideal. Examples include lemon, blood orange, regular orange and amalaki both in whole form or juice.

Signs of illness:

If you notice that a baby’s ears, nose, feet and fingers have become pale, you can consider it as a sign of cold diseases. Wash those parts with lukewarm water. If the baby trembles or has problems talking, it is a sign of hypothermia. Take him/her to a pediatrician immediately.

Conclusion:

As you have already got to learn that a baby’s skin becomes overly dry in winter, you should be more caring and cautious in winter so that your baby can stay safe and unaffected.
