Your little baby is suffering from fever? Here's how to care for him
Parents start becoming anxious about the
wellbeing of their children right after their birth. Parents want their
children to grow up well and stay healthy. However, unexpected events may occur
that cause parents to worry about. One of them is sudden fever in the child,
which is not practically a disease, but just an indication of other diseases
like influenza, dysentery, measles, pox and other problems which are common in
little children. Fever may be triggered by different things like virus or
bacteria which may cause fever even though a child is properly vaccinated.
It is difficult to identify fever in new born
babies as their head and body are kept covered most often, which is why you may
feel warmth in the guise of fever. Put a thermometer under the baby’s armpit
for 3-5 minutes. If you see the temperature reaches over 99 degree Fahrenheit,
you can consider it a fever.
Symptoms of fever:
·
The baby getting weak and feeling dizziness
·
Eclampsia
·
Swelling of the baby’s scalp
·
Keep crying
·
Vomiting and diarrhea
·
Aversion to eat
·
Skin turning pale
·
Frequent breathing and suffocation
·
Visibility of rash
·
No urination in 12 hours
Things to do:
Seeing a doctor:
Take your baby to a doctor if you see any of
these symptoms like measles, diarrhea, yellow eye, no urination, sore throat,
violent coughing, suffocation, trembling with fever and sweating after fever.
Follow a good physician’s suggestions as to how you take care if your child,
what to give him, etc.
Measuring temperature
with thermometer:
On identifying fever in your child, you should
keep measuring his/her body temperature frequently so that you may keep record
of fluctuation if there is any. Such records will also help the doctor to
prepare prescription. Use digital thermometer for an accurate measurement.
Care at home:
With windows open for proper circulation of
air and light, try to keep the temperature of your house comfortable and
tolerable. Do not cover the head of your baby since most of your baby’s body
heat gets released through his/her head. Release of heat is essential for
stopping fever.
Wiping the body with
soaked sponge or clothes:
If the fever rises high, you can wipe your
baby’s body with soaked sponge or a piece of clothing like cotton scarf or
towel. Soak the piece of cloth or sponge in warm water. Squeeze the piece of
cloth a little and then wipe the baby’s body with it. First wipe the hands.
Then, wipe the legs. Wipe some parts like the armpits and groins thoroughly.
Finally, wipe the whole body with a dry towel so that the body of the baby does
not stay wet. Do this multiple times until the fever abates.
Food for the baby:
Do stop breastfeeding your baby during the
fever. Breastfeed him/her frequently so that he/she does not get weak. Give
him/her to eat and drink liquid food, juice, soup and water so that dehydration
does not affect your baby.
The baby’s sleep:
Sleeping is pretty essential for your new born
baby. If your baby catches fever with cough, sleeping becomes pretty tough for
him. However, if your baby gets some sleep, it helps both him/her and you. You
can also take him/her in your arms and take a little walk to offer comfort.
Make sure you keep him/her straight because such positioning helps him/her to
sleep and find comfort.
A new born baby needs to be put under
intensive care during fever. If the fever does not diminishes entirely or keeps
rising with suffocation, nausea and evacuation, take him/her to the doctor. Also,
try to keep your baby close to you as long as possible because proximity to the
mother gives a child utmost comfort at this time. Remember the future of your
child is in your hands. So, if your baby catches fever, proper care form you
can cure of him/her of the condition.
